They also expect you to judge the light and distance yourself. The black CHI L.D. Light Meter Pro is a delightfully modern answer to that very analog problem. This pocket-sized gadget combines a light meter and laser rangefinder, bringing two useful measurements together for people who still love shooting film.

It doesn't turn a beautiful old camera into a phone with filters. Instead, it gives the photographer a little extra information before pressing the shutter. Think of it as a tiny assistant that appreciates grain, manual controls and the suspense of waiting for a roll to come back.

🔦 Get Picky About the Light

The Pro version uses a narrow 7-degree light-receiving angle for selective metering. Point it at a particular part of the scene, such as a bright highlight or a shadowed face, to assess that area's brightness instead of averaging everything together. That's especially interesting when you're dealing with dramatic lighting and a camera whose built-in meter is absent, unreliable or simply nonexistent.

The 0.96-inch OLED screen displays useful shooting information including ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure value and distance. A button and control dials handle the adjustments. You still choose the creative exposure, of course. The meter just gives you something better than a confident shrug to work from.

📏 Even the Distance Gets a Laser

The built-in laser rangefinder measures subjects from approximately 0.1 to 50 meters, according to the manufacturer. That can help when manually setting focus distance on a vintage lens, particularly in low light. It's a measuring aid, not an autofocus motor, so your camera and its focus ring remain entirely your responsibility.

A rechargeable 370 mAh battery powers the meter, with USB-C charging and a manufacturer-rated standby time of up to 90 days. The package also specifies a cold-shoe mount and charging cable. Keep the laser away from anyone's eyes and follow the operating instructions when taking readings.

🎁 For the Photographer Who Still Buys Film

This is a thoughtful oddball gift for analog enthusiasts, vintage-camera collectors and anyone who enjoys making photographs the slow, deliberate way. Its compact black body looks much more at home beside a classic camera than a bulky instrument would.

It cannot select the perfect subject, fix a missed moment or explain why the dog moved just as the shutter clicked. But for someone who enjoys mastering the details of film photography, a little light-and-distance wizardry is a pretty satisfying upgrade.

✅ Why You'll Love It

✔ Combines a photographic light meter and laser rangefinder
✔ Pro model offers selective 7-degree light metering
✔ Laser distance measurements from 0.1 to 50 meters
✔ OLED screen shows exposure settings and distance
✔ USB-C rechargeable battery with long standby rating
✔ Includes a cold-shoe mount and charging cable
✔ Clever gift for vintage-camera and film enthusiasts
